The Satchel Paige Foundation (SPF) is proud to offer scholarships that are given to promote the legacy of Leroy "Satchel" Paige and provide financial assistance to selected low-income single parents who are pursuing a degree through a post-secondary education to increase their earning potential.
Leroy "Satchel" Paige loved the game of dominoes. He and his teammates enjoyed a friendly game of competition at ever opportunity.
The Satchel Paige Foundation is holding the “Satchel” Paige Domino Tournament, at the Westin Crown Center, Kansas City, MO, September 28 and 29, 2012. The purpose of the tournament is to raise awareness and funds for our Single Parent Scholarship Program. The Satchel Paige Foundation will offer 2-year scholarships to low-income single-Parents currently enrolled in post-secondary education.

SATCHEL PAIGE FOUNDATION SINGLE PARENT SCHOLARSHIP FUND QUALIFICATION
REQUIREMENTS AND INSTRUCTIONS
PURPOSE: To provide financial assistance to low income single
parents who are pursuing a course of instruction that will improve
their income earning potential.
CRITERIA:
Single parents will meet the following criteria.
1. U.S. Citizen
2. *Single adult, head of household (single, legally separated,
divorced or widowed).
3. Custodial care of one or more children under 18
4. Resident of Cass, Clay, Platte or Jackson County in Missouri
or Johnson, Leavenworth or Wyandotte County in Kansas
5. High school graduate or GED
6. Low-income
7. Acceptance to a local accredited Missouri or Kansas college/university
or technical school.
8. Applied for Pell grant
9. Must not have previously received a degree from College or University
APPLICATION:
Each applicant will provide and/or submit the
following by appropriate deadline:
1. Print application filled out in ink or typed
2. Identification (driver's license or Missouri State ID, original
birth certificate and/or passport)
3. Social Security Card
4. Verification of Income, W2 for previous tax year
5. Acceptance letter to technical training institution or college
or university.
6. Three letters of recommendation (forms enclosed) from people
other than relatives who are familiar with your character and goals.
Must be mailed to SPF prior to deadline
7. 300-word essay describing how adversities faced by Satchel Paige
can help you to overcome obstacles in your life to achieve your
goal.
8. Statement of goals explaining why you chose a particular course
of study and what occupation you are considering.
DEADLINES:
1. Applications will be made available in October 1
2. Deadline for submitting application March 31
3. Applicants will be notified on June 30
PAYMENTS:
1. One-half of the scholarship amount will be paid at the beginning
of the semester/term.
2. The remaining scholarship funds will be paid mid-semester.
3. End of each semester, student will provide SPF treasurer access
to grades online.
*Single Parent defined as a single, divorced, widowed or legally
separated head-of-household adult with custodial care of at least
one child under the age of 18
